Tile Calculator

Calculate floor or wall tiles, whole boxes and material cost. Subtract untiled areas, add a cutting allowance and switch between metric and imperial units.

Cost

Enter your supplier’s box price. The estimate charges for whole boxes, including the extra tiles in the last box.

Change currency to convert entered prices.

Daily rates from Frankfurter. Bank fees are not included.

Floor or wall

Subtract windows or other untiled areas. For an irregular surface, calculate separate rectangles.

Tile and box size

Enter an allowance for cuts, breakage and spares. Confirm the allowance and actual tile dimensions with your supplier. Grout gaps are not deducted.

Tile material only. Adhesive, grout, labour, delivery and tax are excluded.

How to calculate tiles and boxes

Measure the floor or wall and subtract any area that will not be tiled. Add your chosen allowance, divide by the area of one tile, and round up to a whole tile. Divide this count by the number of tiles in a box and round up again.

Net area = length × width − untiled area
Tiles needed = net area × (1 + extra % ÷ 100) ÷ tile area, rounded up
Boxes = tiles needed ÷ tiles per box, rounded up

A 12 ft × 10 ft floor has 120 square feet. With 10% extra, plan for 132 square feet. Each 12 × 24 inch tile covers 2 square feet, so you need 66 tiles. At 8 tiles per box, buy 9 boxes containing 72 tiles. Six tiles are additional to the allowance because of box rounding.

Example: tiles measured in centimetres

A 4 m × 3 m floor has 12 m² of area, or 13.2 m² with 10% extra. A 30 cm × 60 cm tile covers 0.30 × 0.60 = 0.18 m². Divide 13.2 by 0.18 and round up to 74 tiles. At 8 tiles per box, buy 10 boxes containing 80 tiles. Six tiles are added by box rounding.

Understand the box cost breakdown

At an example $40 per box, 9 boxes cost $360. Before the 10% allowance, the 60-tile requirement already needs 8 whole boxes, costing $320. The allowance pushes the order to 9 boxes, adding $40. The result panel shows this difference rather than pricing a fractional box.

Enter your supplier’s price per box. Changing currency converts that entered price using dated daily reference rates; it does not retrieve retail tile prices. Adhesive, grout, trim, delivery, labour and tax are separate costs.

Allow for cuts and check the packaging

The worked example uses a 10% allowance. Enter an allowance that suits your project. Porcelanosa’s measuring guide includes an extra allowance for breakage and future replacements. Complicated patterns, awkward edges and large tiles can require a different amount. Confirm your layout with the installer before ordering.

This is an area estimate for a single rectangular tile size. It does not optimise cut pieces or deduct grout joints. Use actual tile dimensions, and check the manufacturer’s stated box coverage, especially for mosaics, nominal sizes and mixed-size packs. Different designs and batches should be calculated separately.

For an L-shaped room, split the floor into rectangles without overlapping them. The form estimates one rectangular surface at a time. To combine sections by hand, add their net areas and use the formula above, rounding tiles and boxes only after combining the areas. Adding separately rounded box counts can overstate the order. Use the linear feet calculator for continuous strip coverage; it does not replace tile counting. The area and length guide explains that distinction.

Common questions

Does this work for wall tiles?

Yes. Use wall width and height as the surface dimensions, and subtract untiled windows or openings in the area field.

Why are the purchased tiles greater than tiles needed?

Tiles needed already includes your percentage allowance. Whole-box rounding may add more tiles. The result shows those additional tiles separately.

Can I use this for a tile pattern with several sizes?

Calculate each tile size according to the area share in the manufacturer’s pattern. This tool estimates one rectangular tile size at a time and does not generate a layout.
