Cubic Feet Calculator

Calculate cubic feet from length, width and height in inches, feet, centimetres or metres. Find total volume for boxes, storage and rectangular spaces.

Use outside dimensions for packed boxes and inside dimensions for storage capacity. Changing units converts your measurements.

How to calculate cubic feet

Choose one measurement unit for all three fields, then enter length, width and height. With feet, multiply the three values directly. With inches, divide their product by 1,728 because each cubic foot contains 12 × 12 × 12 cubic inches.

Cubic feet = length (in) × width (in) × height (in) ÷ 1,728

A box measuring 24 × 18 × 12 inches occupies 3 cubic feet. Four identical boxes occupy 12 cubic feet, about 0.340 m³. Enter the number of boxes to calculate their combined volume without retyping the dimensions.

Convert floor area to volume

To calculate from a known floor area by hand, multiply it by the height in feet. The form above instead takes length, width and height. A rectangular space with 60 square feet of floor area and an 8-foot height contains 480 cubic feet, about 13.59 cubic metres. Use inside measurements for available capacity and outside measurements for the space an object occupies. For material spread over a surface, use area and depth to calculate cubic yards.

Cubic feet to cubic metres and yards

Multiply cubic feet by 0.028316846592 to get cubic metres, or divide by 27 to get cubic yards. One cubic foot also equals 12 board feet. For lumber priced by board foot, use the board foot calculator to enter thickness, width and board length. For a garden bed measured by area and depth, the cubic yard calculator also lets you add extra material and a unit price.

Measuring storage and shipping volume

Measure the widest outside points of a packed item, including packaging. A rectangular estimate includes empty space inside that outline. The sum of several box volumes does not tell you whether they will fit through a doorway or stack inside a particular vehicle.

For differently sized items, calculate each size separately and add the totals. This tool calculates geometric volume, not a carrier’s billable weight or shipping charge.

Common questions

How do I enter feet and inches?

Choose inches and enter the total length in inches. For example, 2 feet 6 inches is 30 inches. Or choose feet and enter 2.5.

Is a cubic foot the same as a square foot?

No. A square foot measures area; a cubic foot measures volume. You need a height or depth as well as the area.

Does this calculate the volume of a cylinder?

No. These fields describe a rectangular space. For a round bed or hole, choose the circular shape in the cubic yard calculator.
