To convert cubic yards to tons, multiply the volume by a bulk density expressed in tons per cubic yard. There is no single conversion factor for every material. A cubic yard measures space; a ton measures mass.
The gravel calculator estimates volume from dimensions and accepts bulk density in kilograms per cubic metre. It displays metric tonnes and US short tons separately.
Match the density to the required unit
Metric tonnes = cubic yards × metric tonnes per cubic yard
If the supplier gives density in kg/m³, first convert the volume to cubic metres. One cubic yard is exactly 0.764554857984 cubic metres.
Metric tonnes = mass (kg) ÷ 1,000
US short tons = mass (kg) ÷ 907.18474
| Unit | Mass |
|---|---|
| US short ton | 2,000 lb = 907.18474 kg |
| Metric tonne | 1,000 kg |
| Long ton | 2,240 lb = 1,016.0469088 kg |
Confirm the unit on the quote before comparing prices. Our gravel tool reports the first two units; it does not label a long-ton result as a US ton.
Example: two cubic yards of gravel
Suppose the bulk density supplied for your gravel is 1,600 kg/m³. This is an example value, not a density recommendation for all gravel.
- Convert the volume: 2 × 0.764554857984 = 1.529109715968 m³.
- Find the mass: 1.529109715968 × 1,600 = 2,446.5755455488 kg.
- Convert the result: approximately 2.447 metric tonnes or 2.697 US short tons.
A chosen 10% extra allowance makes the volume 2.2 cubic yards. At the same density, that gives about 2.691 metric tonnes or 2.967 US short tons. Keep the unrounded values through the calculation and round the displayed answer at the end.
Convert tons back to cubic yards
For the reverse calculation, divide mass by density. If a supplier specifies 1.5 US short tons per cubic yard, then 3 US short tons occupy 3 ÷ 1.5 = 2 cubic yards. Multiplying by 1.5 would be the wrong direction.
Cubic yards = US short tons × 907.18474 ÷ density (kg/m³) ÷ 0.764554857984
Use bulk density for the material being delivered
Ask the supplier for the bulk density and whether it describes loose or compacted material. Bulk density includes the spaces between particles. A solid-rock density describes a different volume and can overstate an order estimate.
Moisture, grading and compaction can change the relationship between volume and weight. A percentage allowance in the calculator simply adds material; it does not establish a compaction factor or a vehicle’s safe load.
Start with the cubic yard calculator if you have only area and depth. For bagged mulch, use bag volume rather than weight to work out the bag count.
Reference and method
Mass and volume units use NIST’s conversion factors. Worked examples use mass = volume × bulk density. The chosen densities are stated assumptions. Report a calculation issue.
